I managed to embarrass myself within 5 minutes of arriving at the Nuffnang Blogopolis Conference - that's a record even for me. I was nervous and excited as I arrived at the Sofitel hotel and as I passed through the lobby I spotted a hotel clerk leaning against the check-in desk. Needing to make sure I didn't have anything in my teeth before my grand entrance, I politely tapped him on the shoulder and without looking up from my phone, asked where the bathroom was. I was met with silence, dead silence. Confused, I looked up to meet his gaze only to be caught off guard by the horrified and insulted look plastered all over his face. Then all of a sudden, everything made sense - the hat, the uniform, that look on his face...he wasn't a bell hop or a hotel clerk, he was a Senior Emirates Pilot who obviously hadn't been mistaken for hotel staff in a long time - or ever.
Anyways the benefit of embarassing yourself early in the day is that it only can improve from there and that is exactly what happened. It was a great day, filled with informative panels, discussions and speakers and although I didn't find it as creatively inspiring as some past events, the true highlight was meeting some amazingly hilarious and talented women that I connected with over copious amounts of sauv blanc and the shared connection of blogging. And for me that's what it's all about.
As my Decor8 e-course comes to a closes, we were asked to explore and define our own personal reasons for blogging. Over the past few weeks I've learned so much from class - the importance of blogging from an honest place, the ability to allow your dreams to take shape and the incredible support you get when you share a common goal within a group of strangers. For me, it's always been about connection, community and the ability to share and events like the one I attended on Saturday continue to reaffirm the amazing connection and wonderful people that blogging has brought into my life.
